Background of the Study
Palliative care is an essential component of cancer care, particularly for terminally ill patients. It focuses on alleviating symptoms, providing emotional support, and enhancing the quality of life for patients who are not expected to recover. Nurses play a central role in the delivery of palliative care, providing continuous monitoring, symptom management, and psychological support. In Sokoto State, where access to specialized cancer care may be limited, nurses are often the primary caregivers for terminal cancer patients.
Despite their crucial role, nurses in Sokoto State may face challenges in providing optimal palliative care, such as a lack of training in pain management, limited access to palliative care resources, and the socio-cultural stigma surrounding terminal illness. As cancer mortality rates increase, the need for effective palliative care is becoming more apparent. This study seeks to assess the role of nurses in providing palliative care for terminal cancer patients in Sokoto State hospitals and explore the challenges they face in delivering comprehensive care.
Statement of the Problem
The quality of life for terminal cancer patients in Sokoto State is largely dependent on the effectiveness of palliative care provided by nurses. However, nurses may face significant barriers to providing high-quality palliative care, including a lack of specialized training, insufficient healthcare infrastructure, and socio-cultural factors that hinder the acceptance of palliative care. This study aims to assess the role of nurses in delivering palliative care for terminal cancer patients in Sokoto State and examine the challenges they encounter.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the role of nurses in providing palliative care for terminal cancer patients in Sokoto State hospitals.
To identify the challenges faced by nurses in delivering effective palliative care to terminal cancer patients.
To recommend strategies to enhance palliative care practices for terminal cancer patients in Sokoto State.
